First Amendment – Redacted

Warning I’ve spent weeks thinking about this topic and gathering many sources for this one post, so there are more hyperlinks than I normally use, but each one is worth the watch and/or read.

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.” (Emphasis added)

This is The First Amendment.

There is a reason our forefathers made this THE FIRST AMENDMENT.  Because it is clearly the most important.

Our freedom of speech is our most basic right as human beings.  It’s how we communicate with each other on a daily basis.

But you need to know something.

That “freedom” is now nothing more than an illusion.

For instance:

It’s funny because it’s true!

HA.

Ha.

ha.

Actually that fact that this kind of thing IS true, as seen here, makes it a sobering reality and quite depressing, frankly.

And the really scary thing about this is the TSA, who are supposed to be protecting our airways, rather than jailing innocent people, are actually letting almost anything that looks like a bomb pass through security, as shown here & here.

But I digress.

We are seeing time and again news stories left and right about how we truly have lost our freedom of speech.   And now you’re not even safe on social media, like this girl, here.

Yes, she was arrested for posting  a selfie.  I understand she had a gun, but it wasn’t a threat.  (Don’t even get me started on her lack of trigger discipline, I’ll save that for another post.)  She was expressing herself just as we all do every day on social media.

But as you’ll read in the article Kevin Carrol of the Fraternal Order of Police blatantly states, ““It’s actually against the law to say it in public,”  “It’s a part of the disorderly conduct statute. If it’s against the law to say it in public..why wouldn’t it be against the law to say it to someone through a computer?”

Well, Officer Carrol, because it’s an infringement on the First Amendment!!!  It should NOT be illegal to say in public.  It shouldn’t be illegal to SAY anything in public!!!

Ok, yes, we all know we should be careful on social media these days.  But I can put a sign in my yard, or on my building if I want, right?

Sure, as long as you’re not talking bad about the government.

This happened in Norfolk, VA and the city government told the owner of the company, “a banner of the same size, in the same location, would have been perfectly permissible if, rather than protesting city policy, it depicted the city flag or crest.

So not only are they infringing on the freedom of speech they’re also infringing on the right to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
Well that’s just one small company.  They couldn’t do that to a big company.
What? Like DirecTV?
Don’t you love those Rob Lowe and alter-ego Rob Lowe funny commercials?  Well, say GOODBYE to them!  GONE!
Why, you ask?  Because Comcast got all bent out of shape saying that DirecTV had false advertising despite “DirectTV … said its customers get 99 percent signal reliability, the ‘best picture quality and sound’ in the industry and more sports channels than with other competitors. The company also says to has the highest customer satisfaction rating among all TV providers and has ranked higher than cable for more than 10 years,”
Of course they bickered about whether or not that was true, but bottom line, Comcast got offended, and DirecTV had to pull a great idea for an ad campaign.
But what about false advertising?
Yeah? What about it?  Turns out the current administration actually thinks false advertising is a great idea as seen here and here.

noun: propaganda; noun: Propaganda
  1. 1.
    derogatory
information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view.
“he was charged with distributing enemy propaganda”
    But isn’t propaganda bad?!?
Um, yeah, that’s why it was made illegal in 1948 after WWII by the Smith-Mundt Act, but you don’t have to worry about that anymore.  It’s now perfectly legal for the government to feed you whatever lies they want.
    Seriously.
What was that again about “transparency?”

    WAKE UP AMERICA!!!

This is a call to action.  Because right now we are no more free than Dr. Theo Caulder as portrayed by Cuba Gooding Jr. in the movie Instinct.  (Great movie, and SPOILER ALERT, I’m posting the climax!) But this is exactly where we are sitting right now, only we are not being given the lesson.  We are roaming about with our illusions in tact.

I’m stepping off my soap box for now.  But just remember that our freedoms that are granted by our creator are certain unalienable rights.  Namely; ” Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness…”  And the Bill of Rights is supposed to guarantee things that allow us to live life in the most fulfilling way we can.  It doesn’t guarantee success, only the opportunity for success.  But if we don’t even have the freedoms granted by our Bill of Rights, then we truly have lost our Republic.
